Up to 2,000 children and young adults will be enrolled in a study from Children's National Hospital in collaboration with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) that will examine the long-term effects of COVID-19 and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) after these patients have recovered from a COVID-19 infection.

Faculty members from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center have led the development of PubSeq, a global digital data repository of COVID-19 RNA sequences. PubSeq is open to all interested individuals, primarily researchers working to understand the CoV-2 coronavirus and the pattern of spread of its numerous variants (including the Delta variant).

RedHill Biopharma Ltd. Researchers at UC San Diego Health have launched a pair of clinical trials to study the immune response of COVID-19 vaccinated transplant recipients of bone marrow and solid organs, such as the heart, lung, liver and kidney.

The AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG), the largest global HIV research network, today announced that the Camostat treatment group of the COVID-19 outpatient treatment study, ACTIV-2 Outpatient Monoclonal Antibodies and Other Therapies Trial, will not move to phase 3. ACTIV-2 includes both phase 2 and phase 3 evaluations of multiple investigational agents for treating early COVID-19 in a single trial. The Prevent COVID U study, which launched in late March 2021 to evaluate SARS-CoV-2 infection and transmission among university students vaccinated with the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine, has expanded beyond the university setting to enroll young adults ages 18 through 29 years and will now also include people in this age group who choose not to receive a vaccine.

A year ago, investigators set out to study whether symptomatic COVID-19 outpatients should be given anticoagulant or antiplatelet therapy to prevent clots that were reported among some patients with COVID-19. The data collected to date, through a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), suggests a very low rate of thrombotic complications in the patients studied.

The Urban Health Collaborative, housed in Drexel University's Dornsife School of Public Health, recently published its "COVID-19 Health Inequities in Cities" dashboard -- which exposes deeply entrenched inequities in cities across the United States through the lens of comprehensive data on COVID-19 outcomes.

May unemployment numbers showed a small increase in furloughs for people with disabilities, and a small decline for people without disabilities. For both groups, the numbers looking for work rose slightly. These changes do not alter the overall picture, which remains one of slow progress toward recovery, according to economist Andrew Houtenville, PhD. "Unemployment appears to be leveling off but at a higher level," he noted. "Could this be a new normal? It's too early to say."
