This time-lapse of stomatal development shows the protein SPEECHLESS (in blue) leading to the division of cells that could become stomata and MUTE (in yellow) marking the cells that will follow through with that fate. SPEECHLESS degrades by the end of this process but cytokinin can turn it back on in the cells that didn't become stomata, encouraging the creation of more stomatal precursor cells.
