Prof. Brian van Wilgen warns that we will experience similar wildfires in the future, as the Southern Cape is becoming hotter and drier. We can only mitigate the impact of these wildfires by clearing dense vegetation around your home, dedicated alien invasive clearing programmes in local municipalities, and no new developments in fire-prone areas. The logic of commercial plantations of invasive pines in these areas should also be reconsidered.
